Cricket prediction George Russell: Mercedes needs to try to improve the balance of power, but remain realistic
Until 2026, no one will be able to challenge Red Bull, says Russell.
The Mercedes driver admitted that with the introduction of a budget cap and limited time in the wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamics, which depend on the team`s success rate, the gaps in the F1 peloton have begun to shrink.
But at the same time, Russell still does not see a team that would be able to beat Red Bull under these conditions until 2026, when F1 switches to new technical regulations:
It seems to me that the changes in regulations that we are seeing - with limiting team budgets, limiting time in the wind tunnel [depending on the success of the team] - are really leading to a reduction in the gaps in the peloton. But the question is, should we take this approach more aggressively?
I don`t have an answer because right now none of the competitors can catch Red Bull anyway, even with all these restrictions. In any case, we should focus on ourselves and continue to try to do our best work.
We need to try to improve our position in the balance of power, rise higher, but at the same time remain realistic. Because now Red Bull is still very much ahead of all its rivals, and some other team may only be able to seriously challenge them for the title in 2026.
At the same time, Russell admitted that he is calm about the lack of opportunity to fight for victories at the moment, since the successes of teams in the history of Formula 1 have often always been cyclical:
When you join a team like Mercedes, you only compete to win - just like everyone else on our team. And the same can be said about Ferrari or McLaren. And it was the same with Red Bull during the era of Mercedes dominance.
Unfortunately, this is what always happens in Formula 1. There is always a period of dominance by one team. Over the past 30 years, Williams, McLaren, then Ferrari, then Red Bull, then Mercedes have had such periods of dominance.
